While the Apple TV set-top box remains a massively under-utilised hobby for the folks in Cupertino, Roku has been busy filling its own hockey pucks with an array of streaming channels, on-demand services, top-shelf apps and blockbusting games.

Owners of the £50 Roku set-top box can access the BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Facebook and Flickr and transform any HD TV into a connected powerhouse.

For an extra £50 there’s the Roku XS, offering full 1080p video (something Apple TV can’t), a motion-based controller for Angry Birds gaming, an Ethernet port, Bluetooth and an SD card slot for expandable memory.
