2012 could be do-or-die for the humble standalone satnav and Garmin looks like the first of the old guard to realise this. The 9mm-thin 3490LMT looks like a smartphone and finally brings a capacitive multi-touch screen to into play. Garmin has also overhauled its user-interface and made location searching Google-esque and infinitely more efficient.

There’s also voice control, free traffic subscriptions and an improved four hour battery life. With this sleek, great-looking device, could Garmin awaken its rivals from a slumber and save their punk asses.
