Toshiba TDP-MT700
Beauty's only skin-deep, thankfully.
Everything is set to become much clearer next year when HDTV arrives from Sky. To enjoy super-detailed programmes, you'll need an HD-ready TV or projector, and this is one of the cheapest DLP models you can buy.
For something so hi-tech, it's pretty ugly - the projector equivalent of Vanessa Feltz in a polar bear suit. But it's easy to forgive the Toshiba for being a bit hefty after you clock its performance.
Colours are outstanding and it even avoids the dreaded striping effect. There is also impressive detailing in shadowy areas, adding extra impact to Alien-style "it's behind you" scares.
Our only complaints are a slight lack of contrast, sporadic flickering bands of colour (a common problem with this type of projector) and gentle fizzing noise over some moving objects.
You can get a better picture if you buy a rival model, but it'll cost an extra £500. If you can't stretch to that, but still want Hi-Def, this is for you.
