Universal Electronics Nevo SL

Absolute power corrupts... prepare to be corrupted.

Down on your knees and worship, for this may be the single best thing for the home since television, indoor privvies and plug-in air fresheners.

The Nevo SL is a universal remote of the highest order, with a 320 x 240-pixel colour touchscreen combined with 17 programmable hard keys and enough memory to store commands for all your gizmos. But it doesn't stop there - Wi-Fi support and a Windows CE operating system mean you can control the streaming of files between PCs, media streamers and the like.

In the hand, the SL feels just right - it's a good size and isn't heavy. Thankfully, a neat charging cradle is supplied - and it glows blue, which always adds to the visual appeal.

Setting up has traditionally been a nightmare with uni remotes, but this one comes with a nice man who pops round to your house to configure it with all your kit, at no extra cost. However, if you enjoy fiddling, you can install the PC software yourself and play to your heart's content.

The software is comprehensive in the amount of customisation on offer, but the sheer number of options also means it's not always as user-friendly as it could be. Of course, if you've accepted the offer of having it all set up for you, this won't be an issue. But we liked being able to set our own pics as the background and change the button images. And when you actually get into it, setting up a device is fairly straightforward thanks to Universal Electronics' huge library of infrared codes - these are the guys responsible for the One For All remotes, by the way.

The only real problem we had was with the infrared learning function - a couple of the commands simply refused to work once learned. That aside, this was the most pleasant experience we've had with a universal remote, and the Wi-Fi capabilities promise much for future uses.
