Philips PET1000 portable DVD player
Great styling, shame about the picture.
This is a welcome rarity - a portable DVD player with classy styling. It looks conventional when closed, but open it up and you're treated to matt black, brushed metal, glowing blue lights and an interface that's a pleasure to use.
Alas, unusually for Philips, the screen lets it down. The 10-inch LCD is too grainy and the contrast is so high that detail is almost totally lost from dark areas. The player's disc mechanism is too noisy - think tumble-dryer rather than high-class turntable - and the large battery has to be bolted on to the back of the unit, spoiling the lines of that clean exterior. Looks aren't everything, unfortunately.
