Mustek PL408
Cheap as chips, but at the cost of performance
Despite its rock-bottom price, this portable DVD deck boasts an impressive features list, including an 8.4-inch widescreen, JPEG compatibility and even a progressive-scan output. However, the screen's resolution is low - resulting in an ugly, blocky picture - and the meagre battery life of about 2.5 hours means that watching epic movies is out of the question (although mains and car adaptors are included, along with all the necessary leads). On the plus side, sound quality is decent and the picture when hooked up to a TV isn't bad at all. With better build quality and a nicer screen, this could have been a top contender for the portable crown.
