Nokia 770 Internet tablet

Nokia's Wi-Fi multi-widget is a gadget out of time.

This jack-of-all-trades gadget lets you browse the Web, read news, send and receive emails, play music, video and listen to radio stations.

The natty, black tablet is eminently pocketable and is controlled using the bright and colourful touchscreen.Connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot takes just a few clicks and less than a minute, but you can also connect using a Bluetooth mobile phone, if you can live with the slower browsing speed.

Web pages can be difficult to read. The 4.1-inch screen often forces you to use the zoom function to magnify the text, which means you have to scroll left and right to see the whole page.

The RSS news reader is useful, letting you subscribe to Web news feeds and see updates on the home screen. That means you don't need to keep checking your favourite sites to see
if they've changed.

The audio and video players are capable enough, supporting a wide range of formats, but adding more than the two pre-loaded Internet radio stations is long-winded. Its speaker is weedy, but use decent headphones and the Arctic Monkeys sound as good as you'd expect. You also get image and PDF viewers.

The operating system is unintuitive and irritatingly sluggish. Three hours of browsing time when using Wi-Fi isn't brilliant either, but we'd forgive the lacklustre performance if we could think of a really good use for this. We can't.

Most phones let you check emails, a PDA has many of the same functions plus a powerful organiser, and Sony's PSP does the Internet, movie and music playing stuff, for £65 less. Next!
