Alienware M9750 Gaming Laptop

Weight is a sign of reliability, right?

Alienware's mothership has landed on planet earth once again, and this time they bring shiny new treats from their people. I say shiny, it's more matt-black - like it just fell off the fuselage of a stealth bomber. It's also very, very heavy. Advertisement The M9750 is their power-gaming laptop, and my do you pay for the privilege of being able to carry it around. The top model does indeed have pretty breathtaking specs, but it'll set you back a cool �2400. At face value, you can see where all your money is going, but how does the M9750 stack up against the latest and greatest gaming titles? The point of these machines is to be able to crank up all the effects and resolution to the max. We're using an �1800 model to give you a fair idea, and on games like Half Life 2 and F.E.A.R, they look and run like the stealth-bomber mentioned earlier. But when you start wafting brand new titles like Bioshock under its nose, the results aren't as awesome as you might think. The resolution has to be dropped considerably just to get a decent framerate, and even then it struggles when the bullets really start to fly. Now, it's almost certain you won't get these problems on their top spec model, and probably not for at least another year, but if you're shelling out close to two grand you really expect to be playing current games without having to clip their wings. It's an impressive mix of components to stuff into a small space - a remarkable feat for a notebook, but then you just have to ask yourself: why the hell don't I just get a desktop?
