GAMING GROUP TEST: Nintendo DS

When the big N releases a new handheld, you sit up and take notice, and when it drops the Game Boy moniker, you expect something special.

THE GOOD

The DS maybe isn't as special as we'd hoped, but it's still a great gaming device. The dual screens are big and sharp, and the unit's a decent size for even the biggest hands to fit around. The bottom LCD is touch-sensitive, which means some extra elements in games involving the supplied stylus, and there's also the PictoChat software that enables you to draw or write on screen and zip your scribblings to another DS via Wi-Fi. Battery life is around ten hours, and it can play any Game Boy game ever made, which gives it an awe-inspiring line-up from the off, regardless of the excellent new releases.

THE BAD

It's a bit big and plasticky, isn't it? Plus, so far, the touchscreen's too much of a gimmick - it doesn't really add to the gaming experience.

WE SAY

This is probably the closest thing here to a dedicated games console, which could explain the low price and lengthy battery life. Shame it's competing with the PSP...
