Video game review: WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009

WWE hits back at TNA in grappling game war

The Smackdown vs Raw franchise has, in recent years, synched in a sleeper hold, rendering grappling gamers unconscious with a slew of cash in, new features out, sequels.

THQ have finally helped us to avoid submission with an update worthy of the name. We suspect that finally having a bit of gaming competition from TNA iMPACT may have clotheslined WWE into life.

The finest new addition to this year’s effort is the quite brilliant Road to WrestleMania career-mode where you play as HHH, CM Punk, Undertaker, John Cena or the tag-team of Batista and Rey Mysterio on the way to ‘Mania.

In past career modes, your destiny has been entirely in your own hands. If you win, you progress. Not this time. You can be the victim of a gang attack, lose and your storyline takes a new turn.

It’s the first time a WWE game has offered that unpredictable, anything-can-happen feeling of the TV show, and waiting to see what happens to your guy is even more fun than real-life DDT-ing your infant siblings. The story orientated-detail in the voice over commentary is particularly fantastic here, it’s just like watching JR and King at ringside on RAW.

As always you’ll be able to take your favourite wrestler, ours being the dastardly Chris Jericho, through the career mode on the way to the WWE title, in over 40 different match types, from Hell in a Cell (a 15ft high roofed-cage), to Money In The Bank (grab the briefcase from a ladder to earn a title shot).

Graphically, the game is better than ever, and the gameplay has had somewhat of an overhaul, making the big moves quite easy to execute – a little too easy for hardcore gamers, mind. A fun element of this is performing the special double team moves during tag team match-ups. It’s not quite as innovative as the TNA iMPACT control, which really got a big thumbs-up with us for its newness.

There are as usual bugs-a-plenty. In multiplayer matches, the camera will focus on other rumbles around the ring, leaving you to get your ass whooped blind. Add more than one ladder into the mix and its glitch central.

Overall, however, this is a welcome rebirth for the series, with plenty of room for improvements for future instalments. And that’s the bottom line, ‘cos T3 says so.

WE LOVE

Road to WrestleMania soap opera-style storylines
Re-imagined control system

WE HATE

Still very glitchy
A little too easy at times

WE SAY

A big upgrade from WWE past instalments where the only changes seem to have been the last digit of the title.
