Uncharted has played such an important role in showcasing what the PlayStation 3 is capable of. Do you think Uncharted will play a part in the next generation Sony console?

On the record I have no idea what the future plans are. I went to Sony about a year ago and they had an idea of writing a behind the scenes book from my perspective of how the game is. It’ll be on Amazon and it’s called Uncharted: Drake’s Journal. We have a 128 pages, over 2,000 images that show the motion capture project that highlights the development process. There’s stories in there that people won’t be privy to. My point of this (apart from plugging my project) was that I had a rare opportunity to learn how this game is really made and what the process is with Naughty Dog.

One of my first questions was why isn’t this multiplatform?  You’d sell 25 million copies if it was multiplatform.  The problem is only the PS3’s processor is powerful enough to be able to handle all the information. Naughty Dog pushes that processor to the break, it pushes the PS3 to its limits. Because they are so passionate about the project, I would certainly hope that in the next generation of consoles that Uncharted would get the nod to continue to push those boundaries. I’m not too sure, I’m not really privy to that type of information but if and when there is another generation of PS3 and they get a bigger processor and greater capabilities, I would hope that Uncharted would have the opportunity to see what they could do and take the gaming experience for the Uncharted fans to another level.

Have Naughty Dog signed you up long term to play the role of Drake?

It doesn’t really work that way. I know them all too well now and they are not going to get anyone else!

They wouldn’t work without you playing Drake then?

I don’t think so. That would be terrible. They have been trying to tell the movie companies they shouldn’t hire another actor to play Drake in the film. I’m an actor, I do film, I do television. It is very strange that I don’t even get a meeting with the directors. There’s only 10 million people out there who love the game and love what you do, but we are going to give it to someone else. It’s a little mind boggling. Unfortunately there are often times where there is a lack of imagination. They just go with a big name and take the better odds so to speak.

I’m sure with the backing of the fans, that could be changed?

The funny thing is when I did Eurogamer Expo in London, Richard Lemarchand one of the game designers and myself, we had lines of over three hours just to come meet us. A lot of times in the States they say we can’t use an unknown in a role because we will never get the foreign finance, but more people in Europe seem to know me as Drake as they do in the US. I’m not buying that excuse. I love Europe, and Europe seems to love me. Maybe together we can sway some opinion. This is the best role I have ever played and I am proud because it has taken off and Nathan Drake is so much of who I am. I take it very personal. I probably shouldn’t, but I really do appreciate it. We have great fans of this game all over the world and I’m excited to see where we go from here.
