Having a winter-ific time on the slopes with the Note II

Whether you’re a skilled skier or a stranger to the slopes, you can’t help but be inspired by the style and expertise on show at this month’s World Ski Championships in Austria.

And with some cracking live coverage available on your GALAXY Note II at m.fisski.com, you’d be forgiven for firing up Multi Window to let your fingers ski across the web while taking notes on the best snowy holiday destinations on S Note.

Plan a skiing break with the Note II

It’s easy to plan a skiing break with the Note II. Free apps such as Skyscanner, TripAdvisor and Expedia Hotels & Flights make it easy to bag a last-minute bargain to anywhere, while ski-specific apps are available to help you choose the right resort for you.

Chief among these is Ski & Snow Report, which offers free, up-to-date news for more than 2,000 skiing areas around the world, including seven-day weather forecasts, first-hand reports from other users and even live webcams, so you can see the conditions for yourself.

And after you reach your destination…

When you reach your destination, there are plenty of reasons to keep your ice-cool Note II to hand, too. The Ski Prepper app promises to improve your grip and glide with tips for applying wax in all conditions, while Ski DIN Settings helps you adjust your ski bindings based on your height, weight and skill level.

When you’re ready to hit the slopes, you can consider the Note II part of your complete kit, as its slim build won’t slow you down, and its built-in GPS is ideal for keeping tabs on your location. Its robust design can handle any beginners’ bumps and there are all kinds of apps to help you find the right route for your skill level. Such as:

Ski TrailMaps costs £2.99 and features more than 1,000 detailed maps of ski resorts around the world, showing vital info such as ski-run names and difficulty ratings, and the location of chair lifts and patrol huts.

A free alternative called Snowhit offers similar info, including ski-pass prices, but for a smaller range of resorts, so it’s worth checking both before you go away.

Ski Tracker takes the Note II’s GPS functionality one step further, using your location not only to tell you where you are, but also to track your progress on the slopes, logging your speed, distance, time and more.

It’s a great way to brag about your achievements later on, but it’s also a great tool on the go, as its voice function will update you on your ski every mile, or every five minutes, without you having to look at the screen.

Capturing some great action shots

Of course, the Note II also has an amazing 8MP camera with burst mode to help you capture great action shots of your friends beating their best time, and HD video to record them as they pull off a neat trick. But how do you go about getting the best pictures of yourself to brag about online?

Well, a new app called i-Rewind Ski could have the answer. Currently being trialled at Predeal in Romania, it uses a system of HD video cameras located along the slopes to film you in action. Just turn on the app before you set off, and it will use GPS to let the cameras know where you are at any time, creating a custom movie you can then download using your Note II.

The developers promise more cameras at more resorts very soon, and if it proves popular in Romania, you could soon be starring in your own Bond-style ski scene anywhere in the world.

Staying safe on the slopes

In fact, there’s little the Note II can’t help you with when it comes to your winter getaway, even staying safe.

Apps such as Avalanche Forecast (which covers the US), SnowSafe (Austria) and White Risk (Switzerland) offer safety bulletins for specific areas, while Avalanche Safety turns your phone into a clinometer, gauging the angle of slopes to help you determine the risk of snow instability.

And at the end of the day’s safe skiing, when you’re enjoying a little après something, you can use your AllShare Cast dongle to show off the best of the day’s photos and videos on a big screen, beam them between other GALAXY devices like the Note II or GALAXY S III using Near Field Communication (NFC), or even share them with the whole world via social media.

All that’s left to do is to fire up S Planner to check out the next day’s itinerary – making use of its Maps function to note where you’re supposed to be, as well as when – and maybe sneak in a few rounds of Stickman Ski Racer, just to prove to yourself that you could do that triple-loop jump all along. You might not become a world champion, but you could just top that high-score table!
