3. Garmin VIRB Elite
The VIRB Elite builds on the excellent original by adding a whole range of sensors to accompany the Elite's 16MP 1080p video recording. 4. Rollei Actioncam S-50
Rollei's new Actioncam S-50 is the ultimate in portability measuring in at just 25mm thin. Despite its pocket-sized design this is still one of the best action cameras out there with a 14MP sensor that can shoot 1080p at 30fps. 5. GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition
The 3+ is, as the name suggests, a mere update on the award-winning Hero 3, but it's still the best action camera out there for our money. Every new GoPro just takes the camera further and further. The 3+ is 20% smaller and lighter than its predecessor, with better battery life, clearer audio, faster WiFi and a new SuperView shooting mode for wide-angle shots. It'll shoot 1080p video at 60FPS, and stretches up to 4K video at 30FPS or 12MP still shots. In a word, the Hero 3+ is outstanding.

6. Polaroid C³
This cute little cube captures video and stills at 120 degrees. The 5MP sensor will capture video at 1280 x 720 and 5MP photos too. Obviously, you won't get the same quality as you would from something like the GoPro Hero 3+, but the C³ is a unique little design where quality takes a backseat to size in some respects.

7. Sony HDR-AS100V
In the template of the camcorders of old, the AS100V is designed to be held rather than strapped to your bonce. If you're happy with that, Sony's little cam comes with some significant specs and features. The 170 degree wide-angle lens and 13.5MP stills trump both the Ion Air Pro 3 and the high-performing GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. It can be made shock, water and dustproof via the accompanying case, and can be controlled remotely from your phone too. We wait with baited breath.

8. Ion Air Pro 3
The Air Pro 3 continues to push Ion's action cam portfolio onwards and upwards. At only 142 grams it's barely noticeable when you have it on you, though it will need to attach it to a helmet mount or something similar because of the shape. If you like the sound of 60FPS 1080p video, 12MP stills, a super-wide 160 degree lens and real-time shoot and share via the Ion WiFi Pod at the back, this might be the camera for you.

9. Geonaute 360-degree action camera
