Modern Warfare 2 breaks first week sales record

The New Year is looking good

Modern Warfare 2 ended its first week on a high, selling half a million more units after its record-breaking initial release. It had already smashed the first day sales record for any entertainment product in history, and now its first week's sales have done the same.

To date, the game has sold 1.78 million copies in the UK (1.23 million of those in the first day alone), grossing Activision £67.4 million. Many developers feared this sales onslaught and pushed their releases to the start of next year.

Unfortunately, it now looks like this decision could backfire on them. The game release calendar looks fairly barren until Christmas, with Assassin’s Creed II, Left for Dead 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wii being the only titles to brave the Modern Warfare sales storm.

Meanwhile, the start of next year will see the release of Mass Effect 2, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War III, Battlefield: Bad Company and Bioshock 2 all the in space of two months.

This influx of games in such a short period of time makes it unlikely that any developer will be able to match the cosmic sales achieved by Modern Warfare 2. It’s still only the first week, and with many retailers out of stock, the sales will soon pick up again.
