Halo 3: ODST tops UK video game charts

Kids literally cannot get enough of things that say "Halo" on the box

The latest chapter in Halo, the blue/grey shooting series that made Xbox and Xbox 360, arrived last week - and dutifully took the #1 spot in the UK game charts.

Dumping players on New Mombasa right before the events of Halo 3, the game has you taking on the role of an Oribital Drop Shock Trooper, a combat specialist with more of a stealthy style of play compared to the blow-it-up-first-ask-questions-later attitude of Halo's usual star Master Chief.

As well as the new single-player campaign, ODST introduces new four-player cooperative survival mode Firefight, includes three new maps for Halo 3 multiplayer if you're still banging away on that until 2.30am every night, with a second disc housing the entire Halo 3 multiplayer component - and some 24 expansion maps that have previously been sold as separate updates to the original Halo 3 package.

Finally, buying ODST gets you a download key to be used with Halo: Reach, the NEXT Halo game. ODST owners will, when the time is right, be allowed to download a multiplayer Beta test version of Reach. If you time it right, you might NEVER have to stop playing Halo. Ever. Until you are dead.

The initial idea was to have ODST exist as a cheaper upgrade for Halo 3, before the Microsoft moneymen saw how much stuff was in the package, heard 'kerching' noises in their ears, and decided to stick the thing in the shops at full price.

That plan worked.
