LG 42PX5D HD ready plasma TV
A big-screen plasma that looks good and performers well.
This LG has A great price-to-features ratio. Two grand is peanuts for a screen that's HD-ready, has a digital tuner with seven-day electronic programme guide, provides a slot for direct playback of digital photos and MP3s, looks great and boasts the latest incarnation of LG's XD Engine picture processing system. In fact, the only niggle on the features side is the lack of a facility for setting timer events from the EPG.
The socket selection is impressive too. It includes HDMI, component video, three Scarts and PC VGA, as well as a PayTV slot for the digital tuner.
The LG's pictures are impressive and look sharp without turning gritty; colourful without being unnatural; high in contrast without seeming forced.
Colours are exemplary with DVD and HD pics from our Xbox 360. However, they did become noisy with lower quality sources, while the shiny screen can reflect objects in your room to the point where it feels you're actually on Countdown.
But what did you expect for this price? Perfection? Not going to happen. But for £2K, this feature-laden TV with only a few minor foibles is as good as it gets.
