Sony DVP-NS92V DVD player
Give your DVDs an HD boost, if you're pocket's deep enough...
In the late 90s, we were so blown away by DVD that throwing on a copy of Highlander was enough to get friends oohing and aahing. Now players such as this Sony have taken the silver disc to the next level by upscaling to Hi-Def.
The sleek-looking spinner takes a normal DVD and boosts the image to HDTV resolution via HDMI. Hook up an HD-ready projector or flat-panel via this all-digital connection and the player will do the rest, providing tons of extra detail. In the opening scene of Shaun of the Dead, for instance, the difference is immediately noticeable: using Scart, the characters' faces look slightly soft and fluffy, but through HDMI they're razor-sharp, with stubble and so on showing up far more clearly.
It isn't the cheapest HDMI-equipped player around, but the picture's a little crisper than that of the £110 Samsung DVD-HD850, plus you get SACD playback thrown in. Personally, though, we'd fork out another £50 for Denon's DVD-1920, with its sharper picture and fuller sound.
