Panasonic debuts Z1, its first wireless HDTV, at CES 2009

Panasonic is striving to keep your living space clutter-free with its new wireless HD technology, built into the brand new, ultra-skinny Z1 plasma series.

 

Wireless HD is, as the name quite obviously implies, a system for transmitting a high definition signal through thin air, instead of using an HDMI cable. Powered by SiBEAM Inc. technology, it can transmit uncompressed 1080p signals with no deterioration in quality even when you waft your hand in front of it.

 

The Z1 also features Panny's latest VIERA CAST system, which streams content from the web to your TV. A new partnership with Amazon will see US users being able to stream video from Amazon's video on-demand service direct to their telly, without needing a computer or other streaming peripheral.

 

There's a good reason for going wireless, apart from the fact it looks rather smart: the Z1 is just 1- inch thick so there's not a lot of room for space hogging video ports and it would ruing the skinny form factor. It also has an SD card slot and is compatible with H.264 video.
