CES 2009: Palm to launch iPhone-like smartphone

Palm goes for broke at the last chance saloon

With the likes of Apple, RIM, Nokia and indeed Google/HTC doing very well out of the smartphone market right now, PDA pioneer Palm has some serious catching up to do if it plans to stay in the game. Just as well it has what's described as an 'amazing' device lined up for CES.

We don't know too many concrete details as yet, but according to the Crunch Gear site, it's something special. We're promised the all-new Nova operating system, a 'portrait-orientated' touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, media playback, the usual calendar, email and contacts, plus its very own apps store.

Indeed, it may look like the handset here, which has been mocked up by the guys at Boing Boing Gadgets based on the facts so far known. But with the handset being made by HTC, it could end up looking more like a Google G1. Either way, expect the term 'iPhone killer' to be thrown around liberally when it launches this Thursday and a more reasoned critique from our folk on the ground minutes later.
