Nvidia showcases GeForce 3D Vision at CES 2009

Bin those green and red frames...

Saying 3D viewing is a new concept is like saying the same for war. The 1950’s saw the birth of those awful cardboard green and red glasses, but try as they might, Hollywood has yet to make the idea truly viable.

More recently, various computer manufacturers have toyed with creating 3D displays for games, and now 3D TV screens are at the very forefront of consumer tech.
It’s all early days though, which is where Nvidia comes in with their GeForce 3D Vision glasses.

The rather fetching shades are designed to connect wirelessly with your computer monitor, and work with it to trick your brain into thinking they are creating a 3D image.

The monitor sends two differing images (one to each eye), and the gap in between gets translated as depth.

The best part is, Nvidia claim that this system can turn anything with depth information (eg. All 3D computer games anywhere) into 3D.

Downsides? The system needs a lot of computer horsepower to run smoothly 9since the screen refreshes at double-speed: 120 fps), and compatible screens will be expensive, but overall this is the most convincing home-based 3D system we’ve seen so far.
