Paint it black with Metalmaster

Painting railings ranks alongside unblocking drains and assembling IKEA furniture as least exciting things to do on a Sunday. But that was before Hammerite let us have a go on its excitingly named Metalmaster paint gun.

Painting railings ranks alongside unblocking drains and assembling IKEA furniture as least exciting things to do on a Sunday. But that was before Hammerite let us have a go on its excitingly named Metalmaster paint gun.

In the picture it looks much like a regular spray gun for air-born paint, but it's much cleverer than that. When you clamp an earthing wire from the gun to the metal that you want to paint it creates an electrostatic field around the metal that draws the paint particles to it, so that the spray forms a mist around your target, coating it evenly on all sides. What that means is that you can paint both sides of your fence, or other metal object, at the same time. Genius! And because the paint is attracted only to the metal, you don't have to put newspaper down and the paint refill goes much further than it would the old fashioned way. It's a win win win situation.

Metalmaster launches next year and will sell for around £40 for the gun and £15 for a canister. The sooner we get one of these over to the guys that paint the Severn Bridge, the better.
