Magellan RoadMate 800 Satnav

The over-sized, over-priced satnav that's lost it way.

Magellan's latest RoadMate adds MP3 playback and a photo viewer. However, it feels like it's been designed by someone who's never clapped eyes on a multimedia jukebox. The on-board speakers are tinny, menus are over-complicated and there's a spongy keypad alongside the bright 3.5-inch touchscreen.

Although this locks on to GPS signals in under a minute and offers quick destination selection, it freezes repeatedly, needing frequent re-boots - not good if you're on the busy streets of Rome.

The hard disk houses a million POIs, and recent UK speed traps from pocketgpsworld.com, although there's no traffic info. But while the spec is generally good, this feels clunky. £500 also feels like too much for a unit that crashes more often than George Michael.
