Onkyo CR-505 micro hi-fi
Introducing iPod's new best friend.
Onkyo's latest baby punches well above its weight, thanks to a DAB radio and an iPod-friendly upgrade option.
By adding a £60 dock, iPod users can control their little white chum using the hi-fi's remote. Skipping through tracks is a cinch, although as the hi-fi doesn't display track names on its own screen, you have to rely on the iPod's, which is impossible to see from more than a couple of metres away.
Sound quality is excellent with all kinds of music, although you'll find things get distorted and strained when you crank the volume up to party levels. Tone controls provide an element of adjustability where needed, like when you fancy taking the edge off some of Oasis's poorer recordings. DAB and FM reception are both very solid.
This is also a rather fine-looking unit, with an aluminium fascia and controls that are clearly laid out. The buttons are tiny, but all functions can be accessed from the remote control.
Offering real hi-fi sound, a stylish design, DAB radio and that extra appeal for iPod owners, this Onkyo is a sensible choice, beating Denon's D-M35DAB for both sonics and all-round capability. As long as you don't party too loud, there's nothing to complain about.
