Maxell Time Domain Speaker MXSP-4000.TD
Is it a blimp? Is it a ball? No it's just the new Maxell dock
Choosing a speaker dock can be a treacherous task. Some look flashy but don't have it in the sound department, whilst others sound great and look like John Prescott's arse.
Maxell's TimeDomain offering is a flashy looking dock, and is an ok bit of kit. A mere 240mm in height, and a rugby ball-esque design; it would look good on your mantle. Whack your pod in the egg-shaped dock or there's an aux in socket at the rear for those non pod fans. There's a remote for us with Jim Royle tendencies; change the tune without breaking a sweat. Perfect.
Blimpish-ness design we can live with. Making Led Zeppelin sound like a wet fart we cannot.
The concept for the speaker sounds rather sexy. There's a speaker at the back and one on the right and left edges, according to Maxell this allows a "vividly realistic spatial experience." Go figure. On the street this means it meant to sound good and better than your average box-dock. Unfortunately it doesn't.
Design-wise this is a quirky speaker and much better than previous models shipped onto the market but that's not the point. The shape is meant to make our music sound better and it doesn't. Michael Buble still sounds rubbish.

WE LOVE
Quirky designSimple remote
WE HATE
Bad soundThat Maxell still won't try and cater for the shuffle in any form.
The built in comfort play mode made no noticeable difference.
